Description

Tundra Grill City model combines the cooking possibilities of an outdoor-use Tundra Grill and a standalone fireplace that provides warmth. As the “City” name implies, it is designed to be suitable for the urban environment; the compact design is suitable for various terraces or gazebos and detached and terraced yards. The City has a spark screen that goes 360 degrees around the fireplace, offering a beautiful view of the burning fire through it. The spark screen can be turned to the side easily when poking the fire or cooking, and it also effectively prevents burning sparks from getting to the terrace deck or other surroundings. The firepit of the City is well protected from wind with the wind deflector reaching to the edge of the smoke hood. Similarly to the other Tundra Grill models, also City can be fitted in a hut, terrace, shelter, gazebo etc. with chimney sets.

Please note that when installing it indoors, you will also need a chimney set, not included in the standard delivery. Chimney systems available as accessories guarantee the effectiveness of smoke extraction, as long as the replacement air of the structure is properly taken into account.

Tundra Grill® indoor installation

When installing a Tundra Grill® fireplace indoors, compliance with the fire regulations is paramount. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • The flue pipe must reach 300 mm downwards from the nearest combustible roofing material and correspondingly it must extend 100 mm above the roof top. (See chimney installation diagram in product images)
  • The length of the chimney depends on the slope and the height of the roof, but the distance between the top of the chimney and the nearest flammable roof material must be at least 80 cm.
  • The outer flue included in the chimney set can only be used in buildings with no heat insulation or suspended ceilings. If you are planning to install a Tundra Grill® fireplace in a thermally insulated or suspended roof building, you will need a custom-made fire-insulated flue piping.
  • Fire regulations also require that there be a non-combustible base, i.e. concrete or sheet metal, under the fireplace and 500 mm outside the edges.
  • The fire is always made directly on top of the grate. This ensures the best combustion when the replacement air comes directly from under the firebox and the fire safety measures are met when the fire burns in the middle of the fireplace. Do not place firewood against the windshield on the back wall of the fireplace in order to prevent overheating of the windshield and damage to the paintwork.
  • Please pay extra attention when handling fire indoors!

How to get good and smoke-free indoor air in your summer kitchen, barbeque hut or gazebo

Replacement air is one of the most essential things in smoke removal. New replacement air from the outside must be drawn at least as much as is exhausted with the smoke. With a fire indoors, an air shortage emerges in the hut or gazebo. When there is not enough replacement air, smoke does not exit the chimney because there is no uplift, and the outflow of air slows down. Good and smoke-free indoor air therefore requires a chimney with a diameter of approximately 30 cm and enough air to replace the outflowing air.

  1. The best and draft-free way to solve the correct flow of replacement air required by an open fire is to build a tight radially framed floor in the structure, which is left open from under the floorboards. A hole of 25–30 cm is made under the fireplace, from which the airflow rises directly into the grate; this results in a good, steady airflow inwards. When the fire is burned, the flow accelerates and thus a good upward draft is created into the chimney.
  2. Another popular, but not so good way to solve the supply of replacement air is to immerse replacement air pipes in the foundations of the building. The pipes should be about 150 mm in diameter and at least 4 should be installed to point in different compass-points. To achieve good airflow and operability, the position of the pipes should be pointed upwards, as much as possible, towards the fireplace. No proper airflow is achieved using horizontal piping.
  3. Worst ways to get replacement air are different kinds of holes under doors or in walls. The airflow through them is too strong, easily making the smoke whirl around indoors. During winter, such holes also cause a strong cold draft to the feet.
